I should/would be there by now if I had started earlier.
He would have been there by now if he had not missed the train.
I go, you go, he go后者I be, you be, he be。 I be sent, you be sent, he be sent。因此,如果主語(yǔ)是復(fù)數(shù),便顯示不出虛擬式與陳述式的區(qū)別;除了虛擬式be與陳述式am/is/ are/was/were有所區(qū)別外,其他動(dòng)詞的be-型虛擬式只有在單數(shù)第三人稱(chēng)主語(yǔ)之后才是由標(biāo)記的。
            a)用在decide, decree, demand, insist,moveorder,prefer,propose,recommend,request,require,suggest,vote等動(dòng)詞之后的that分句中。例如:
He ordered that all the books be sent at once.
We propose that somebody neutral take the chair(擔(dān)任主席)。
She insisted that she go to the south for her holiday.
Congress has decided /voted/ decreed that the present law be maintained.
The doctor insisted that he not eat meat.
The board(理事會(huì)) has given instructions that the agent fly to Boston.
We were faced with the demand that this tax be abolished.
Your advice that she wait till next week is reasonable.
Their decision was that the school remain closed.
His order that the troops not be sent at once was carried out.
He ordered that the books be sent at once.
=He ordered that books should be sent at once.
=He ordered the books to be sent at once.
It is important that she be placed in an appropriate job.
=It is important that she should be placed in an appropriate job.
=It is important for her to be placed in an appropriate job.
be-型虛擬式能用于由if, though, whatever, lest, so long as等引導(dǎo)的分句中表示推測(cè)、讓步、防備等含義。例如:
If he be found guilty, John shall have the tight of appeal.
If the rumour be true, everything is possible.
Though everyone desert you, I will not
Whatever be his defense, we cannot tolerate this disloyalty.
So long as a volume hold together, I am not disturbed as to its outer appearance.
Whether she be right or wrong, she will have my unswerving support.
Quietly we sat on the river bank lest the fish swim away.
If the rumour is true, everything is possible.
He hid himself in the bush lest he should be seen.
Whatever his defense may be, we can't tolerate this disloyalty.
Long live the People's Republic of China!
            God bless you!
            God damn you!(該死的)
            Heaven forbid!(天理不容)
            Devil take him!(混蛋)
            So be it.(但愿如此/就這樣吧。)
            Suffice it to say that...(只需說(shuō)……
Far be it from me to(我極不愿) spoil the fun.
He will remain here if need be.
Home is home,be it ever so homely.
I were, you were, he were;如果動(dòng)詞為進(jìn)行體或被動(dòng)態(tài),其助動(dòng)詞也一律用were,如 I were going, you were going,he were going;又如 I were sent, you were sent,he were sent,因此,were-型虛擬式只有出現(xiàn)在單數(shù)第三人稱(chēng)主語(yǔ)之后,它才在形式上與陳述式was區(qū)別開(kāi)來(lái)。
            were-型虛擬式常用由if,if only ,as if,as though,though引導(dǎo)的條件狀語(yǔ)和讓步狀語(yǔ)分句中,表示非真實(shí)的條件或讓步。例如:
If I were you,I should wait till next week.
If it were to rain, the game would be put off.
If only I were not so nervous.(要是不那么緊張就好了。)
He spoke to me as if I were deaf.
He behaves as though he were better that us.
Though the whole world were against me,I would do what I consider as right.
I wish it were spring all the year round.
I'd rather I were not at the site of the accident.
            Suppose the earth were flat.
Just imagine everyone were to give up smoking.
If it was to rain ,the game would be put off.
If only I was not so nervous!
I wish it was spring all the year round.
I'd rather I wasn't at the site of the accident.
            但是,在if I were you 這一句中,通常只用were,不用was。
Were I to do it(=If I were to do it,I should rely on you.
            還有,在 as it were(作 so to speak解,即“宛如”、“好比”)結(jié)構(gòu)中也只用were,不用was。例如:
He is my best friend,my second self,as it were.
以上所述用should代替be,用was代替were就是一例,甚至還可根據(jù)語(yǔ)義意圖干脆用現(xiàn)代時(shí)形式。例如:
            I wish I were/was there.
He looksas if he were/was/is sick.
Imagine you are the salesman for Franco's product.
I were,you were,he were;如果動(dòng)詞為進(jìn)行體或被動(dòng)態(tài),其助動(dòng)詞也一律用were,如 I were going,you were going,he were going;又如 I were sent, you were sent,he were sent,因此,were-型虛擬式只有出現(xiàn)在單數(shù)第三人稱(chēng)主語(yǔ)之后,它才在形式上與陳述式was區(qū)別開(kāi)來(lái)。
